the season

You know, when I talked about it being "recombinant" season, I really had no idea, and I mean I really had no idea. How word spreads! But I digress.

A killer app is loose. Ruby on Rails hit 1.0 and that's kinda cool for people who want to make, like, websites without the sort of brain-bending configuration issues that made a mockery of my sleep schedule for several weeks this summer and several days last month. At the site you can find out more, and much as I like (and will need to master more of) Python as a language and direction, Rails is almost too easy, and all of a sudden you can have a web database.

Also... movies I want to see whiz past me so fast my saccades are gonna need coffee. Syriana, Wardrobe, Munich, Kong, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and about fifteen others. I count myself fortunate to've caught Harry Potter even. Books and movies, how I miss them. For some reason determining the order and properties of Abelian and non-Abelian groups doesn't fill the void. It's not that I don't love math, it's that I love everything and studying math doesn't leave room for much else. This also means that [livejournal.com profile] commonperson, [livejournal.com profile] 2ndaryairplane and [livejournal.com profile] saucyvixen get less bodies to throw in the way of their "incomings". Also that I haven't seen them barely at all. -> Sad Panda.

And... more Seleucid madness in that corner of the earth. Others would have more to say on this -- I shall head over to Aqoul to see what there is to say about Syria and Lebanon these days.

From the heavy to the weightless... my shiny (jet) Motorola V3 has decided that a working display is old news, and all the cool kids are not displaying information. Consequently it is not working as a display, merely as a dialpad. I guess I'll have to see whether other of its brethren are similarly disinclined to exhibitionism. 'Cause cellphones shouldn't just have blank screens.

Aaaahhh... my updates are so often so infrequent that I feel I should vent thoroughly. But I won't. I'll do little one-word synopses of things, like Retrocity Friday Good, or Family In Florida, Grandmother Okay But Dwindling. National Anthems rehearsal with XTX (my unclever name for the Torontonian Tonal Ecstasy alumni who'll be singing at the Marlies' game).

Other stuff will be addressed in another post.

Oh, here's one. I like to name my electronic devices after early games by electronic game companies I like. Hence my iBook "Menace" (DMA), my RAZR "Archon" (Toys for Bob), and things I'm gonna call stuff like Apshai (Epyx), Hellcat (Microprose/Firaxis) and Karateka (Br0derbund/Mechner). And looking into Epyx, of Impossible Mission and [ANYTHING] Games fame, and Br0derbund, who did Carmen Sandiego and Lode Runner and Print Shop, I realized a pattern was emerging: that if I named every device after the first game each of these companies produced, they'd all be called Galactic Empire or Space Conquest. It's a reassuring to know that the first thing on the minds of just about everyone who would go on to start a kickass game company was the simluation of galactic conquest. Makes me feel better about my irrational craving for the next few episodes of New Galactica.

And all the worse about my inability to focus on the task at hand. Currently: writing a LJ entry about how everyone's first game was about conquering the galaxy. Should be: reviewing Kernels and Inverses. Sometimes feel like: stabbing myself in the eye with my optical mouse.

*Also: all of you out there! Do you need hugs? If I'm not there to provide them, immediately avail yourself of the nearest possible source. I'm thinking people are desperately hug-deprived in this insane winter season, which is already seeing temperatures near -11 Centigrade, biting winds, and rocky times for relationships. Get your RDA of hugs, dammit. If I should happen to be around, don't hesitate to ask.
